Every time that I would hear the song: “The Girl from Ipanema” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, I can’t help but feel relaxed and eventually allow my mind to simply wander. The sound of the saxophone, the soft intonation of the Portuguese lyrics, and the slow beats are alluring to my ears. It definitely makes me feel like I am that beautiful lady described as tall, tan, young, and lovely under the Ipanema sun, walking gracefully like a samba dancer. The power of music is truly amazing.

I grew up hearing my dad play songs from this genre and it shaped my taste in music. I would think of entering a coffee lounge in a five-star hotel or casino every time I would hear jazz. The perfect music video to describe this scenario is Sade’s “Smooth Operator.” Men wearing tuxedos, women wearing long gowns, and the whole set screaming luxury. They said that people who enjoy jazz are the more sophisticated ones. They tend to be more extroverted, have high self-esteem, creative, intelligent, and at ease.

Love is like a never ending melody. This lyric from Perry Como’s “Slightly out of Tune” makes me want to fall in love with someone deeply just like how easily I fell in love with jazz. This song is perfect for date nights: having dinner in a restaurant while drinking some champagne, and having a smooth, easy-going conversation as you get to know one another better.

Then, Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” is the perfect accompaniment as you slow dance with your partner in a ballroom—a night filled with romance and elegance. I could imagine myself dancing with the guy I am interested in as we are feeling the music, our hands intertwined, and, maybe, just maybe…passionately kissing.

If I have to choose my favorite cover of the Tony Renis 1962 hit single “Quando, Quando, Quando,” it would be Michael Buble and Nelly Furtado’s version. They were able to make the song sound even more sensual. The mix of the instruments was able to jive well with their voices. I could think of making out in the bedroom with this song. I can’t wait a moment more. Tell me quando, quando, quando (when, when, when). Hearing this line while making out for the first time will surely turn you on and have you feeling like you want to take it further.

Here is the playlist that I curated for you when you are feeling fancy, or when you want to step into the pictures I’ve painted for you earlier.

These songs are perfect for having coffee when you are out in the veranda while it is raining, when you are chilling by the fireplace at your house, or even when you just want to listen to some relaxing music at any point of the day. Jazz instrumentals are so relaxing to listen to—it’s perfect background music for when you need to slow down or if you are studying or reading a book.
